Howard Smith — Artist Statement

I was born in Prince George, grew up in Creston and later in Vernon. The outdoors has always figured large in my life and I enjoy back-country travel at all times of year – mountains are in my blood. Visual art has also been important to me since high school where I was introduced to pen and ink drawing and photography. After a couple years of computer science at Okanagan College I decided to pursue my interest in visual arts and completed the digital-media program at Vancouver Film School. For twelve years I had my own consulting business in Vernon while living most of that time on Silver Star Mountain. In 2009 I moved back to the Kootenays to start an outdoor photography business.

Photography allows me to live an outdoor lifestyle and fulfill the creative instinct that I find very important. The subjects for natural fine art are everywhere if we have the eyes to see. I like landscapes but also really enjoy the wonder of small things in macro (close-up) photography. Looking for compositions that are unique and express the subtle complexity of the Kootenay mountain ecosystem is what defines my work. The latest digital tools allow me to create images that express my love for the mountains.
